How to convert WebM to MP4

    1. Add your fileDrop it on the page, choose it from your device, or paste it with Ctrl+V.
    2. ConvertAdjust settings if you like, then press the button. You'll see live progress.
    3. Browser processing uses original files on your device. Public-link downloading is unavailable.

    What happens to your file

WebM files are common for website video, HTML5 players, transparent overlays, but not every app or device opens them. MP4 is the better choice for sharing, uploading to social networks, playing on any device. Spool converts WebM to MP4 with FFmpeg — real decoding and encoding, not a renamed file extension.

A real re-encode. WebM usually contains VP8, VP9 or AV1 video with Opus or Vorbis audio, which MP4 players can't decode, so Spool re-encodes to H.264 video and AAC audio. "Balanced" is visually indistinguishable from the source for most videos; "High" uses a lower CRF for archiving; "Smaller file" trades a little sharpness for a much smaller file.

Convert and edit files on your device. The browser edition accepts up to 100 MB total, media up to 10 minutes and video up to 4K. Codec availability and device memory can limit individual jobs.

    Where WebM files come from

WebM is Google's royalty-free web video format. You usually end up with one when:

    • A browser-based screen recorder or webcam app saves your recording (Chrome's built-in MediaRecorder writes WebM).
    • You saved a video from a website that streams in WebM.
    • You downloaded a clip from YouTube with a desktop tool that picked the VP9 stream.
    • An animated sticker or overlay was exported with transparency.

WebM plays in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and VLC, but iPhones, many Mac apps, PowerPoint, Premiere Pro and most social networks either reject it or play it unreliably. MP4 with H.264 works in all of them.

    What happens during conversion

Unlike MOV or MKV, a WebM almost never just changes container. Most WebM files use VP9 or VP8 video, which MP4 players don't expect, so we re-encode the picture to H.264 with x264. The audio is Opus or Vorbis, and becomes AAC.

Quality settingH.264 encoder settingsUse it for
HighCRF 20, "medium" preset, AAC 256 kbpsEditing, archiving, anything you'll process again
Balanced (default)CRF 23, "veryfast" preset, AAC 192 kbpsSharing and playback; visually close to the source
Smaller fileCRF 28, "veryfast" preset, AAC 128 kbpsEmail, chat apps, slow uploads

CRF (constant rate factor) is a quality target: lower numbers mean higher quality and bigger files. The encoder spends more bits on busy scenes and fewer on static ones, which is ideal for screen recordings where most of the frame doesn't move.

AV1 WebM files are the exception. MP4 can hold AV1, so on Balanced we copy the AV1 video unchanged and only convert the audio. If your player can't decode AV1, pick High to get H.264.

    How long it takes

Because it's a real encode, time depends on length and resolution. Short 720p screen recordings take a few seconds; on our development machine, 1080p encodes faster than real time. The progress bar shows the stage, percentage and estimated time left, and you can keep working in another tab.

    Screen recordings: smaller and smoother

Browser recordings are often variable frame rate and sometimes lack duration information, which confuses editors (the timeline shows 0:00, or audio drifts out of sync). Re-encoding to MP4 writes a proper index with the correct duration and timestamps, so the result imports cleanly into Premiere, Final Cut, iMovie or CapCut. Text and UI usually look crisp at Balanced; choose High if fine text looks soft.

    Transparency is lost

VP9 WebM can carry an alpha channel (transparent background). H.264 MP4 can't. After conversion, transparent areas become solid, usually black. If you need a transparent animation for a website, keep the WebM; for an editor, use a format with alpha support such as ProRes 4444, which we don't output.

    FAQ

Will converting WebM to MP4 reduce quality?

A small amount, because the video has to be re-encoded. With the default "Balanced" setting (H.264 CRF 23) the difference is not visible for most videos; choose "High" to minimize it.

    How long does it take?

Re-encoding runs at roughly real-time or faster for 1080p video. You'll see live progress and the time remaining.

Can I convert several WebM files at once?

Yes. Drop up to 10 files at a time — each one is converted in parallel and you can download them individually or all at once.

Is there a file size limit?

Convert and edit files on your device. The browser edition accepts up to 100 MB total, media up to 10 minutes and video up to 4K. Codec availability and device memory can limit individual jobs.

Is this WebM to MP4 converter free and safe?

Yes. There are no pop-ups, redirects or fake download buttons, and no software to install. Files are transferred over HTTPS, processed in isolated job folders and deleted automatically.

Will the MP4 play on iPhone and Android?

Yes. MP4 with H.264 or HEVC video and AAC audio plays natively on iPhone, iPad and Android, as well as on Windows, macOS and smart TVs.
